Portable Transformer car part 1

Had a good friend send me a picture of a portable transformer car. Found it to be pretty neat so I started planning. Here is what I come up with so far.



Locomotive Maintenance Part 3

Here the start of the asp pit and the water tower. I keep putting off the ash pit due to having to cut a small hole in the layout but once that was done it turned out pretty good.

Locomotive Maintenance Part 2

Got to work on the locomotive terminal a little more. Started the diesel fuel storage tank. Used an older Bachmann tanker and Walthers piping. The building is from a Bachmann kit but I don't remember the name of it. Also did piping on the sanding tower.

Locomotive Maintenance Part 1

Started redoing my locomotive terminal for the past week so far this is what I have got completed.

Sanding Rack started out as an Atlas covered hopper that I got off eBay with a couple locomotives. It had some damage, and details were broken off. In June 2011 issue Model Railroader author Kazuo Terasawa did an article on kit-bashing a Modern Sand Tower. Since that article, I have been wanting to build one like it.

From the kit, I removed the grab irons some of the couple pockets and build a frame out of Plastruct material that the car could sit it. I then added handrails, roof vents, and piping.

I also detailed the coaling tower. Since I had the kit one thing about it I didn't like was the ladders. I am modeling between the 70s and 80s and I felt like they needed cages around them. I added Plastruct cage ladders. It took more then what I thought it would but I like how they look.

Next build is an asp pit, water tower(scratch built), and a diesel fuel storage tank (built from old tank car)

Found a picture of the Trix BOF Vessel before I painted it. Also pictured is ladles from Brandon Wehe and the ladles that come with the Walthers Electric Furnace.

BOF Vessel in place still have to work on the ground cover a little, but I like how it is looking.

The BOF vessel is from the Trix BOF kit the rack and crane was scratched built.

I am in the process of adding a BOF Vessel outside the BOF building. This is the outbound hot metal side of the furnace.

Work bench

Had a few people ask about my work Bench. Where I build most of my models. It isn't much but it get the job done. It is located on the back side of the peninsula below the unloading docks at the steel mill.

Completed locomotive.

Locomotive still needs a good weathering but here it is put to work switching the scrap side of my BOF.

The locomotive was striped primed painted and decaled. Next few pictures are of the locomotive before I reassembled it.

2-8-0 Steamer Part 1

While reading Steel Mill Railroads in Color Vol. 2 I came across a couple pictures of Northwestern Steel & Wire company's (NWS&W) 0-8-0 steam locomotive. I know steam locomotives are nothing new in a steel mill but what caught my attention was this locomotive was still in use on a daily bases in 1979. With my mill set between the 70s and 80s, I figured I would model one for my steel mill.

I started with a Bachmann Spectrum 2-8-0 painted green for the Southern railroad. Nice locomotive good color scheme but I have bigger and better plans for it. The picture was taken on my good friend's layout Ronald Armstrong.
